The Aficionados Design Natives
Architecture is a statement. Before you even step inside, a building speaks through its facade, its materiality, its heritage, its defiance or its embrace. From the charred elegance of shou sugi ban in South Tyrol to the iron-rich bricks of New York’s industrial skyline, every structure carries with it a legacy of climate, craftsmanship and culture. Design Natives explores this dialogue, the way architecture borrows, adapts and reinvents local materials to shape spaces. These aren’t simply hotels, guesthouses or hideaways: they are physical manifestos of design deeply rooted in their surroundings. Great architecture intensifies its surroundings. A revisited vineyard hotel in the Portuguese Alentejo borrows from agrarian traditions, with clusters of villas and townhouses reminiscent of simple farmhouses. Alpine chalets evolve from rustic shelters into refined statements of engineered wood, glass and bold modernity. They belong yet they defy, inheriting the past and reshaping it.
