Soaring property prices mean more and more of us are being compromised on the amount of space we can afford to buy or rent. Meanwhile, the trend for downsizing means that many people no longer want the responsibilities that come with larger properties. Beautifully Small demonstrates how small homes can be practical, comfortable and beautiful spaces to live in. In her introduction, Sara discusses truly tiny spaces such as boats and caravans as well as her own home – a workman's cottage in a London suburb – and gleans inspiration from them. Next, in Chapter 1: Elements of Design, she discusses how planning decisions can be complicated by the constraints of diminutive interiors and suggests clever design solutions. The second chapter, Elements of Style, offers ideas for making small-scale interiors work through creative styling and decoration. In Chapter 3: Small Spaces, Sara visits a variety of compact homes and takes a closer look at imaginative treatments for pocket-sized interiors, showcasing a variety of tiny spaces that include a terraced worker's cottage, a minuscule studio with a clever mezzanine level that incorporates a bathroom, a sleek modern apartment which has been cunningly reconfigured and a chic but compact coastal hideaway. With specially commissioned photography of real homes and well-researched text offering a wealth of practical information and decorative inspiration, Beautifully Small is a truly imaginative guide to making the most of even the tiniest home.
